Trackle

Trackle is a simple shipping application built with raw html, css and javascript.

Overview

About the project.

Trackle was meant to solve a problem, but it was also a learning experience. I wanted to learn more about how to build a web application from scratch, and this project gave me the opportunity to do just that.

My goal was to create a simple shipping application that would integrate with our existing MIS, that way orders would flow straight to the shipping department without excessive manual input. I wanted to make it as simple as possible for the shipping department to use, while also making it easy for me to maintain and update.

Before trackle, the shipping department was using a pen and paper system to deliver orders, which was time consuming and prone to errors.

The creation delivery form, which has a bunch of fields that are automatically filled in from the MIS, and a few fields that can be filled in by the user.

Highlights

Interesting parts.

01

Integrating with the MIS

The entire goal of this project was to make the shipping department's job easier, and that meant integrating with our existing MIS. The system we were using at the time did not have an API, which meant I had to figure out how to pull data from the MIS and display it in a way that was useful for the shipping department.

02

Reaching the customer

Another goal for this project was to make it easier for the shipping department to reach the customer, which meant integrating with our customer database / records system. This allowed us to send an "Delivery Confirmation" email to the customer when their order was shipped, which was a huge improvement over the previous system of calling the customer or leaving a voicemail.

03

Making Life Easier

The shipping department was using a pen and paper system to deliver orders, which was time consuming and prone to errors. Trackle allowed the shipping department to quickly and easily create deliveries, which saved them time and reduced errors. Now, with the use of the mobile app, shippers can quickly create deliveries from their workstation, or on the go, without having to go back to their desk to create a delivery.

Takeaways

What I learned.

The entire proccess of building this project was a learning experience, and I learned a lot about how to build a web application from scratch.

I have always found a lot of value in building things from scratch, and this project was no exception. It helped me to understand how web applications work, and how to build them in a way that is maintainable and scalable.
